This is an excellent source for young musicians and also adults who want to deepen their knowledge of classical music. The book is well illustrated and well written. I highly recommend it!

“Music is the universal language of mankind”, said Longfellow and so starts Chapter 14 in this book by Helen Bauer which is for “Young People”- some of whom may not be young in years. What you have is a beautifully written reference work which is easy to understand and finally allows the reader to use terms such as:”Tonality”, “Oratorio” and Renaissance” and understand how they apply to music and history. What Ms. Bauer shows is the fact that music and history are inseparably bound. All this in a little book which will undoubtedly be used as a text in music schools. I recommend it without reservation.
