This is a wonderful book. I purchased after using our library’s copy. Does a wonderful job of giving beginning information as well as a more developed history of use and design of the instruments. Not detailed enough to be considered a text book, but perfect as a jumping off point.

I purchased “Those Amazing Musical Instruments!” on amazon recently. It has a wonderful breakdown on all regular symphony instruments, by family (brass, percussion, strings, etc.). The book includes each instrument’s history and role in the orchestra, pitch range, how it’s played, made, and where it sits in the orchestra, as well as entertaining notes and quotes from some of its players and composers through history. The full-color photos of the instruments being played, and close-ups of instruments’ construction are very helpful. The CD-ROM includes sounds of each of the instruments, including highest and lowest notes, the solo sound of the instrument, and how it sounds when played in an orchestral piece. Clips of classical pieces that highlight each instrument are fun. My kids (2-10) and I have been greatly enjoying going through one instrument family a week, and inviting over someone we know who plays one of the instruments from each family, so they can touch and try playing. My one caveat: I thought the book came with a regular CD when I bought it, and kind of wish I had better speakers to go with my laptop, as the volume doesn’t get high enough for my taste, with the CD-ROM, so that might be an extra expense for some. This is a great book & program, and I highly recommend it for those wanting to focus on music and get the students acquainted with the orchestra, perhaps before a field trip to a local concert (as my kids have asked to attend!).

When Marin Alsop was the Music Director of the Colorado Symphony, it was the first time for me that a conductor actually talked to the audience and explained what we were about to hear. She made the music come alive and does the same as “the guide” of Those Amazing Musical Instruments! Beautiful photos and illustrations, chatty and interesting text, and great organization make this book a joy to read. The accompanying CD has terrific excerpts that really make you see how each instrument is unique. Highly recommended!

What a fun book!! I love reading it myself, not just to my 4 year old. He’s been really into musical instruments, so this book helps him to learn about each one in a very simple way. The book is put together such way that you can either read just a short paragraph about each intstrument or keep on reading more in depth to an older child. I love the CD as well! It has great examples of how real instuments/orchestra sound. I was very surprised to hear the Ukrainian Nationaly Symphony on it (my uncle is the director)! Anyway, excellent book!

Great book with lots of information, fantastic photos, and cd-rom. I have a four year old that loves instruments and we look at this book almost every day. It’s been a great learning tool.
